The exhibit explores the complex triangular relationship between material, process and environment. While some of the projects presented at this exhibit investigate and study new ways of using, processing, or growing materials; others, criticize the ways in which we - as a society - refer to the resources around us.

A skillful traveler leaves no track… wrote Lao Tzu in his book Tao Te Ching and added …if you do not care for the material; you are on the road to confusion… (Chapter 27). This chapter is the conceptual basis for the exhibit Materialness – which aims to examine, investigate, and ponder the meaning and identity of the materials around us - in particular as a base for creation. In addition, the exhibition explores the effects and ramifications, both positive and negative, of the material and the process on the environment, considering both the social-consumer level and the physical- environmental level.
The exhibit seeks to shed light on works that find the tension between the source of the material (earth and growth) and the process (product and effects). In an age in which most things seem to be accessible, fast, and replaceable, the exhibit presents projects that focus on the process itself, its duration, the raw materials used, and alternatively the environmental implications of the processes that occur as part of and/or following the production. The exhibit features nine projects created and designed by lecturers, graduates, and students of Bezalel, Academy of Arts and Design, from various departments; and by doing so present the subject as a broad spectrum and study it from different and various angles.
The exhibition was produced by and with the help of Udi Urman, Executive Director, Friends of Bezalel.
