Mielle Harvey
After graduating from RISD in 1993, with a BFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing, her interest in jewelry as a conceptual art form took her to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany, where she was a Masters student under Professor Otto Kunzli, graduating in 1999.
Since then, Mielle’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums both nationally and internationally, including; Jewelers’werk Gallery, Washington DC, The Pinokothek Der Moderne in Munich, and The Grassi Museum in Leipzig, Germany.
Throughout my work, I am continually exploring the theme of 'momento mori', to create narratives about our relationship to nature and impermanence. The "timelessness" of jewelry, and the permanence of metalwork in particular, makes it an interesting medium for exploring ideas around mortality. I see my jewelry as a visual elegy, through which I pay homage to preciousness that we often overlook--found in this endless flux of growth and decay. By depicting transience and vulnerability, I try to evoke a sense of empathy and enliven how we see the world around us." Recent works of jewelry created by painting and drawing directly on thin sheets of silver, and works on paper using graphite, pastel and oil paint techniques. " This series is an exciting synthesis of my interests--drawing and painting have always been a vital, but less public part of my practice.
