Intro
Manhattan, NY - The story of Mulan, took place thousands of years in China before being marketed as a Disney princess love story, tells of a young woman who broke through society’s expectations of being a nice wife and fought at the frontiers alongside with men. In her time, the ideology of being the perfect woman was to be constrained and bound by the societal standards set by men. Yet, women are valued for so much more. With the love and support from her family, Mulan achieved what was deemed to be impossible in Ancient China.

The spirit of Mulan is to challenge traditions with interpretations and new possibilities. Thousands of years later, people around the world and from different backgrounds carry on the spirit of Mulan in every field of work including Jewelry.

When talking about Chinese artists, it’s common for the audiences to think of Chinese art in the traditional sense: antique porcelain, calligraphy, cheongsams, and so on. The spotlight on these magnificent traditional Chinese art forms has left the works by the young Chinese artists in the dark. Mulan casts light on a new type of Chinese contemporary art which deviates from the traditional perspective— jewelry as an unconventional art medium. Like all cultures, Chinese traditional jewelers create extravagant jewelry with gold, pearl, precious gems for aesthetic pleasure and the royal class. It’s worth noting that a new generation of jewelry artists with different styles and creative visions, express traditional ideas in contemporary ways, and even contemporary ideas with traditional techniques for the purposes beyond traditional values. Mulan presents theses young Chinese jewelry artists from diverse backgrounds and influences. Each artist with the spirit of mulan, uses jewelry to reinterpreted tradition, art, culture and origin.

An interesting flow-up on Mulan’s story: it’s circulated among the people until today through a song, the Ballad of Mulan. The last strand of the song writes: The male rabbit normally hops and runs, while the female sits and stares. But both flee fast when danger threatens. How can one tell whether they are male or female then? End with this charming metaphor, Mulan dares to question the viewers: is the work before you, art or jewellery, eastern or western? Or in the end, does it matter anymore?
