Part I:
Old Meets New: Ancient Techniques - Iconic Jewels - Contemporary Interpretations.
Throughout ancient history, people from all cultures have been creating and celebrating the power and beauty of jewellery. Rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings were symbols of beauty, wealth, status, and power. Many of the pieces were believed to be magical, amulets were often worn for protection and special powers. A myriad of metalworking methods were used, including casting, enamelling, granulation, filigree, and cloisonne. These metalworking methods developed in ancient times, reflect a great tradition of artistic skills, still defining jewellery design today.
Today, modern technology and newly developed methods and techniques have transformed the countless ways stones, metals and other new unexpected materials can be formed. The creative possibilities of contemporary jewellery making are limitless.
Mobilia Gallery invited artists to create powerful jewels combining ancient techniques with their unique skills, masterful techniques and technology.
Part II:
New narratives: Every Jewel Tells a Story.
Throughout history, jewellery has been worn as a universal piece of adornment. Used as a powerful protection from the dangers of life or as a mark of status or rank. Underneath every piece of jewellery is a story, thoughtful commentary, personal history, symbolic or cultural.
Mobilia Gallery invited artists to be storytellers, sharing the inspirational ideas and thoughts behind their exuberant jewellery, and reflecting upon their materials and techniques used to create a narrative with their works of art.
