The drop wants something. It carries an alluring duality – at once still and in motion. The drop balances, challenges, and suggests a direction – yet holds an unresolved energy within.

Galleri Smedjan presents Åsa Lockner ’ s solo exhibition The Persistence of a Drop. The title refers to a quiet but determined force – the one that shapes the world slowly, almost imperceptibly, yet with undeniable impact. At the same time, the Swedish saying “the drop that made the cup run over” resonates with our current moment, when so much anger lies beneath the surface, ready to spill over. Both expressions mirror a time marked by pressure and transformation, and by the urgent need to find more sustainable ways of living together.
I see the drop forms in my jewellery as a metaphor – not least in relation to dialogue and democracy. To me, it ’s about recognising that every small voice, every single drop, can shape the future. That understanding is an undercurrent that drives my work right now.

Formally, the drop holds a tension that is deeply compelling. It is in motion, on its way, almost unable to rest. In Åsa Lockner ’s work, the drop becomes a means to express both balance and imbalance, weight and lightness, strength and fragility.
In the jewellery presented at Galleri Smedjan, the drop takes on many expressions – as a cut stone, as a suspended trace, or as the hard surface of metal opening itself to light. Through her choice of materials, Åsa Lockner explores their possibilities, yet it is always the form that leads the way. The drop is small and simple, yet it contains an entire world of movement, force, and meaning.
Opening: Thursday, October 23, 5:00–7:00 pm.
With support from the Swedish Arts Council and Region Jämtland Härjedalen.
Åsa Lockner (b. 1973) is based at Mellösaverken in Mellösa, where she has her studio. She holds an MFA in Metal Design from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, and has been active in contemporary jewellery since 1999. Through an intuitive and exploratory process, she creates jewellery and objects that move between fragility and strength, harmony and dissonance. Her works are represented in several public collections, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg.
Galleri Smedjan is a new initiative for art jewellery and craft, based in Östersund in northern Sweden. Galleri Smedjan is founded and run by Sanna Svedestedt.
