For the curator, a challenge was posed: How could one make a chain that would cross the sea and link two continents? As ambitious as it seems, that is exactly what the Projeto Corrente/Chain Project does.
A cock alone does not a morning weave.

A CASA museu do objeto brasileiro inaugurates its 2013 calendar with a challenge: bringing together artists scattered around the world in one and the same object—the chain. “A chain crossing oceans….” That was the first image that occurred to the jewel designer Marina Sheetikoff, curator and mastermind behind the project. With its opening scheduled to take place on Wednesday, February 20, the exhibition runs until March 23, 2013.
“Jewelry nowadays is an art that has found its own path, whose preciosity no longer lies necessarily on beauty or on the use of noble material,” Sheetikoff states. “Without leaving that option out, it directs its focus also to meaning and concept, finding spaces of expression away from the human body and inside galleries and museums.”
The designer used contemporary jewelry international social networks to invite artists to devise pieces of chain measuring approximately fifteen centimeters in order to create a unique piece. Among the 130-plus works received, sixty-five were selected, from twenty countries. The outcome is a twelve-meter-long piece, made up of different raw materials, including concrete, paper, silicone, gold, silver, and organic matter. Metaphorically speaking, it is as if each selected piece were a link in the new chain.
According to the curator, “since the chain is the basic piece in jewelry, the concept behind this project is the expression the word chain may encompass, in addition to its meaning itself. In nature, a current of air and the current of a river translate the path this project aims to follow: to grow and split, dreaming of crossing oceans.”
