PXL-MAD School of Arts presents the graduating work of their MA students: EXIT/18.
Artist list
Moana Andreani, Lara Ceuterick, Pia David, Camille El-Achkar, Selien Lips, Janika Slowik, Gertjan Vandezande
The decor for EXIT/18 is CCHasselt, a true cultural centre that has many years of experience with hosting a wide variety of cultural events. EXIT/18 is the last, yet not the least impressive stop for our students before they really do walk through the EXIT, hungry and curious about their future.
In keeping with tradition, the work of our master students in Object & Jewellery and the Visual Arts is on display side-by-side with the graduation projects of the students in our degree programme in Arts Education. Also on show are the graduation projects of the master students in Photography, Audio-visual Arts and Product Design (LUCA-School of Arts, Genk), and to those of the Architecture and Interior Architecture programmes (Faculty of Architecture and Arts, University of Hasselt).
Guiding teachers:
David Huycke, Audi Pauwels, Gésine Hackenberg, Bert Willems, Tine De Ruysser.

Bracelet: The Love Hate Relationship, 2018
Sterling silver.
12 x 7 x 1 cm
From series: Imago
While people wish to be unique, they also feel the need to belong to a specific group. In my investigation into the different accessories and attributes that reinforce the online and offline persona of a whole range of groups, I found there is an overarching attribute. An object is worn close to the body by anyone, regardless of class, social status or age: the smartphone.
‘Imago’ is a series of jewellery, using the Iphone as a metaphor. This jewellery is made out of precious looking materials. The archetype of the iPhone is minimalised to its contours, empty frames and details with, hinting of the superficial. It is about the online persona versus the offline persona, the gray area between real and unreal.

Object: Bubble, 2018
Aluminium
38 x 17 x 15 cm
From series: Metal Vivant
The love for products created through manual labour is inherent to being human. This can be seen in the proud way we declare that our purchased goods are ‘handmade’. Even so, western society is losing touch with this property as a result of over-digitalisation and the resulting over-consumption. In “Métal Vivant”, the importance of craft is proven through the creation of handmade objects in aluminium. Organic shapes referring to sea life are brought to life by hammering, cutting and folding this metal, which is most often associated with mass production.

Ring: Flat Ring, 2018
Brass, lacquer.
5 x 5 x 0.1 cm
From series: @Jewelleryli(k)es
Fake it till you make it! Do keep this aphorism in mind while looking at the project @jewelleryli(k)es. Within the project, jewellery is seen as a social lie inspired by Instagram as a (social) medium. Pia David plays with the idea that everything can be used as a part of the image. Instagram takes centre stage. The white lie lies in the analogue translation of the Instagram fake. This is expressed in three groups of work: painted two-dimensional jewellery, pieces with quotes for the sane and sensible and glass ‘filters’ as adornment for the world surrounding us.

Brooch: Mineral Pearl, 2018
Resin, brass, glitter, transfer foil.
7 x 4 x 3.5 cm
From series: Capture Totale
“Eau Divine”, “Glow the day”,” Satin touch”, “Bare mineral” are all slogans that appeal to the imagination. The cosmetic industry sells these messages in luxurious packages, mentioning precious ingredients such as pearl, gold, diamond and minerals. These valuable materials are supposed to have 'magic' healing powers for the body. Of course, they are also the archetypes of beauty and jewellery. In this collection, I translate this 'precious' seduction into pieces of jewellery. What attracts us? Is it material itself, or is the thought of a noble ingredient sufficient? By transforming artificial materials into desirable jewellery, I want to make the wearer and viewer aware of the seduction techniques used by the cosmetic industry, where things are often put in the scene and not everything is what it seems. Whether these promises about the powers of cosmetics will fulfil is not certain, but their seduction is undeniable.

Brooch: Solid Vulnerability, 2018
Chalcedony, brass, steel, silver.
5.7 x 5.7 x 7.7 cm
From series: Unintended Beauty
Architectural scaffolds are external, functional auxiliary constructions that are not built with the intention of them being aesthetic. In this collection, however, attention is drawn to the unintended aesthetics of scaffolding.
If you take the time to admire scaffolding, the beauty of the repetitive linear pattern, the connections, and the contrast between the massive building and the open scaffolding becomes visible.
These functional and visual characteristics are transformed into jewellery. Raw stones function as a representation of the massive buildings. Just like open scaffolds support a building from the outside, thin constructions twist around these rough stones. The constructions, based on the visual characteristics of the scaffold, become unconventional stone settings.
This master collection shows the translation of constructive scaffolds into architectural jewellery.

Brooch: Katalysator, 2018
Stainless steel, diffraction grating film.
8 x 8 x 6 cm
From series: Jewellery Moment
A glimpse into a childhood memory, when the world was as beautiful as it could ever be: while playing in the water on a hot summer day. The sun is reflected on the surface of the water and makes the water splashes all around you shine. Everything is glittering and in movement.
For Janika Slowik these little effects that make the world more worth looking at are jewellery moments. In her project she created pieces that play with the surrounding light: they reflect it, split it into rainbows and interfere with it. The pieces work as jewellery moment catalysators. Through wearing them, the wearer and viewer see more of these precious little details, making their world look more beautiful.

Pendant: HB-1G, 2018
Slate, cotton.
8 x 6 x 1 cm
From series: Rituals of Making
The project ‘Rituals of Making’ consists of objects and jewellery that were created ritually.
During long hikes, the maker collects natural material. When he returns to the studio, he arranges and manipulates them. Only the material that fit the backpack can be brought back home, so the first selection happens during the walk. The manipulation consists of the adding of a pattern, a pattern inspired by the impressions of the hike. The patterns are made by drilling holes, milling and cutting lines into the material.
Each object is telling their story of the pathway. The pathway to the final pieces.
