The project / exhibition Real Jewellery - Portuguese and Brazilian Contemporary Jewellery, with the Portuguese and Brazilian curatorship, by Cristina Filipe and Lúcia Abdenur, was conceived so as to be a part of the official Celebrations of the 200th Anniversary of the arrival of the Portuguese Royal Family to Brazil in 1808.
This initiative establishes a cultural and artistic exchange between Brazil and Portugal, and provides for the exchange and fusion of several historical and creative references from both countries.
Twenty four Portuguese jewellers and twenty four Brazilian jewellers take part in this exhibition.
The work of each pair of artists, one Portuguese and one Brazilian, is based on a jewel or object, of inspiration, dating from the late 18th century or the beginning of the 19th century, with reference to the period of the reign of King Dom João VI, so as to create a new group of contemporary jewellery, specifically developed for this event.
The reference pieces or objects will be chosen from the collections of the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, in Lisbon, the Museu Histórico Nacional in Rio de Janeiro and the Museu Imperial in Petropolis.
The aim is to, in this way, confront both periods and both cultures as well as to build a bridge not only between the past and present but also between the two groups of artists that represent the two nations on which these Celebrations are focused.
