For Danni Schwaag, the appeal lies in making, in trying things out, experimenting with form, color and material. She has to play, to play with the material. A circle that twists, turns, starts over and never ends, a vibrating idea stabilizes and takes shape.
Artist list
Danni SchwaagSchwaag's ongoing works were developed during an artist-in-residence at the Jakob Bengel Foundation and the Idar-Oberstein University of Applied Sciences. The main material is galalith, which she combines with enamel and mother-of-pearl. Galalith is a 100-year-old casein material, a precursor to today's plastics, and during the Art Deco and Bauhaus periods the material was used in Jakob Bengel's company to make jewelry and buttons. The material is no longer produced and conveys a tone of the past.
In the series of work Coagulated twist that will be shown at Four this material, galalith, plays a lead character. The works refers to the qualities of the material and Schwaag draws parallels to her own state of being; the recurring questioning of (artistic) creation, enduring crises and finding meaning. Accepting, getting stuck, wriggling out and finding new paths.
Perhaps ‘twisted’ thinking is the most honest form of clarity, because it forces us not to flee in a straight line and because clarity sometimes only comes when one dares to be confused. Where something twists, tension arises. A thought that wraps itself around itself can become an insight – or a knot. / Danni Schwaag
