Xin Tang. Necklace: A Fantasy about Wood 1, 2020. Wood, silver, fibre.. 45 x 2.5 x 40 cm. Photo by: Xin Tang. From series: A Fantasy about Wood. Statement: In recent works, I focus on forest conservation, and my inspiration comes from the gene refraction/mixing in the film Annihilation. I imagine if this kind of forest destruction continues in the future, there will not be enough resources for us to survive. Perhaps future scientists will study the mixing of human and plant genes so that humans can live with less water, soil and sunlight. At this time, will people's body surface appear some plant characteristics?. Xin Tang

Intro
This year, the world has suddenly changed at a rate that could not have been predicated. MA students from the School of Jewellery have had to face various challenges throughout their course and use their critical thinking, resilience and creativity to give the world their owner answers during this time. Their designs reflect a strong emotional mapping of reality, showing the state of our current environment, and psychological and physical phenomena. Under Covid-19 restrictions, the students have adopted different methods of designing their works, which include a combination of completed physical artefacts, technical drawings and CAD design. They hope to create a pervasive voice and vision through the showing of this online exhibition.

Kexin Cheng. Ring: Social Tool 01, 2020. Acrylic, silver, pearl, elastic rope, painting.. 13 x 5.5 cm. Photo by: Shuqing Shi. From series: Something about gossip. Statement: The concept of my work focuses on the similarities and differences between the communicative function of gossip and jewelry. In my opinion, gossip is not only positive or negative, it is a multifaceted behaviour. It will not only hurt people but also become a communication tool to help people carry out social activities. After doing some research on gossip, I found gossiping as a way of communication has a certain commonality with the communication between designers and audience through jewelry. In the process of studying my project, I analyzed the different communication characteristics of gossip, and extracted four representative characteristics from it, namely, the characteristics of communication, harmfulness, reducing pressure and narrowing people's distance.. Phoebe Dao. Collar: Coronavirus, 2020. Surgical face masks, recycled plastic, bioplastic, food colouring, tea leaves, cotton threads.. 40 x 62 cm. From series: WHAT HAVE WE DONE?. Statement: People are aware of plastic pollution but can be easily distracted. The use of PPE during the current Coronavirus pandemic is a good example, as we see that people are very concerned about saving human life by wearing protective face covers or gloves but then discard them without a second thought. I like my work to be thought provoking and challenging.  I also want my work to stimulate feelings and emotions around the damage that is being done to humankind by discarded plastic waste, including clinical waste.. Tangju Duan. Ring: Moodiness, 2020. Topaz, aquamarine, alloy.. 4.6 x 4.4 cm. From series: Moodiness. Statement: As a female, I will also be excited or break down because of some small things in my life, which is easy to increase psychological pressure. So "Female Moodiness" has a negative effect most of the time. Because women's emotional society sometimes has prejudice or discrimination against women, causing women greater physical and psychological pressure. My research shows that emotional states are also affected by various hormones in the body, and our pupil dilation is one of the quickest and most direct emotional responses. It is a subtle but true reflection of our emotional ups and downs.. Tangju Duan

Anne Edwards. Brooch: New Perspective, 2020. Copper, powder coat, silver spray paint, steel brooch pin.. 6.9 x 3.5 x 2 cm. From series: It’s No Longer Black and White. Statement: In Eastern philosophy, light and dark are seen as equals, one exists within the other and cannot be separated. I believe Eastern philosophies views on collectivism and duality can present a new perspective in the Western way of thinking. In a modern world, we need to be able to adapt to our growing and changing environment. My work plays with this connection of light and dark as black and white and this new perspective, which is silver in color, and introduces the fundamentals of Eastern philosophy.. Anne Edwards

Qin Guo. Shoulder Piece: Touch the Real, 2020. Plant fibre, silicone, silver.. 38 x 5 x 12 cm. From series: Did you lose your sense or touch?. Statement: I am committed to studying human senses and human emotions related to touch. What kind of sensory experience can people get by wearing tactile jewellery? In daily life, we often touch the things around us, but this habitual behaviour makes us seem to ignore the rich emotions brought by touch and lose the ability to think about touch. Therefore, I hope to re-evoke people's losing senses through tactile jewellery. Human beings have empathy, and vision sometimes affects the sense of touch. When you get the sense of vision, the hand is touching something similar to the sense, so with the help of vision, even if you don’t touch, you will get a similar feeling to the touch.. Qin Guo

Luting Xu. Ring: Identity Verification - Seal ring, 2020. 18k gold, Kunlun ice jade, Shou Shan stone.. From series: Identity Verification. Statement: The embarrassing moment of the menstrual marks remaining on the clothes triggered my thinking on this topic. In addition to dealing with this embarrassing moment, menstruation also affects women's gender identity. Because of periods, women have to deal with the effect of menstruating every month, would produce eggs, and might get pregnant, so that means women need to deal with contraception as well. All of these things help to construct identity that for women more focus on their bodies. I used the visual metaphors, like menstrual stains, contraceptive pills symbols and some images created by myself to express my understanding of this topic, such as protection, status and the complexity of relationships.

Zhou Zhou. Body piece: Apocalypse - Habitat, 2020. Aluminium wire, light clay, artificial pearls, sugar, plastic ball, glass ball.. 122 x 63.1 x 212 cm. Photo by: Zhou Zhou. From series: Habitat. Designed for future humans.
.
. Statement: In my work, I want to convey the possibility of future human beings (a serious, objective, non--judgmental presentation). My work will leave some blanks and guesses for the audience to fill and guess by themselves. For example: what will the world be like in the future, what will human beings be like in the future, how will they reflect on their lives in the present. I believe a good work of art is a wordless communication between the designer and the audience. I think it's also a way to wear fantasy jewelry -- to let the audience add their thoughts and judgments to my work and to keep my work reflecting and perfecting. I hope my work is both physical jewelry and ideological jewelry.

Statement: This project comes from my reflection on personal consumption behavior under the prevalence of consumerism. Consumer culture urges everyone to unconsciously change their consumption choices. It used to be "I buy what because of who I am," but now more and more we are defining "who I am" by "what I consume." This culture encourages people to constantly pursue new consumer goods in order to satisfy their spiritual happiness. Too much marketing advertising, too much material temptation, too much personal time for consumption choices. Who is being consumed?. Shilei Zhu
