The very first edition of Stockholm Craft Week wants to reach a wider audience and highlight the international level of excellence maintained by Swedish contemporary crafts. The program, taking place in central Stockholm and in Gustavsberg on 3th – 6th of October 2019, includes openings, seminars, artist talks, open studios and more.
Artist list
Karin Roy Andersson, Hanna Liljenberg
During this event, PLATINA is happy to open the duo exhibition Scissors and Cuts. Hanna Liljenberg and Karin Roy Andersson´s works have many connections; repetitions, organic shapes and slow-growing structures. The jewelry pieces grow bit by bit. Paper pieces are folded and glued, plastic scales are mangled and stitched, but the lowest common denominators are probably the scissors and all the cuts.
Hanna Liljenberg
The new body of work with the title Within is about an out-of-body flora, expressed in jewelry and drawings. The use of scissors or knives give the work sharpness and directness, but pens and brushes are also important tools for the artist. The jewelry is like organic vegetation, and the carbon drawings, become an extension of the wearer. Hanna Liljenberg is interested in the body's physics, problems and radiance, and to explore the dynamics between the human body and the jewelry.
Karin Roy Andersson
Giving new life to leftovers and garbage gives Karin Roy Andersson satisfaction and she appreciates that the material already carries stories. A constant search for new plastic materials to recycle, and the interplay between her and the qualities of the materials, challenge and motivates. All the plastic makes her wonder what in our time will be saved and in what shape it will be passed on to the future. What will the future fossils look like?
Stockholm Craft Week is the first of its kind for Swedish crafts and the aim is to become an annual event. The promoters Konsthantverkscentrum, Värmdö Municipality and Konsthantverkarna want to shed new light on contemporary craft and make sure the field receives the attention it deserves.
Swedish contemporary craft has undergone a strong development throughout the 2000s and holds an exceptionally high international level. Nevertheless, craft is rarely seen or featured in larger contexts or in political initiatives. Few countries can match our Swedish line-up of multifaceted artists working within the field – we have a golden opportunity to show them off, says Maj Sandell, Director at Konsthantverkscentrum.
