As part of the selection of the jewels shown, there is a twelve-layer reductive woodcut made in collaboration with Marais Press at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette by Daniel DiCaprio. The Dissolution of Memory and Values print started in March 2020 shortly after the beginning of the Covid 19 epidemic. Mardi Gras celebrations are believed to be the first super spreader events of the virus in Louisiana. This piece took just short of two years to completely carve and print all twelve layers of the image. Throughout this time, society has continually been challenged with conflicts between traditions and scientific advice. The imagery is a complex tangle of Mardi Gras beads. When viewed from up close it is difficult to see the interconnectedness of the shapes in Daniel Dicaprio's work. The marks and textures look very handmade, and the ink is thick with layers. As you back up the image becomes visible and takes on photographic quality, a clearly tangled mess of beads.
The prints took over 200 hours to complete and consists of twelve layers. Sales of the prints will be used to support the continuation of Marais Press. Marais Press is an initiative of the Printmaking Studio at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and is a fundraiser for student scholarships in visual arts.
