Bio
I am the founding director of Bilk Gallery for Metal and Glass a contemporary gallery that has been running for 19 years, first in Queanbeyan, then Manuka, and now in Carwoola. My career spans 43 years, with work held in every major institution in Australia as well as international collections. I have received numerous awards and have been included in significant exhibitions both nationally and internationally.Statement
My work is firmly grounded in and abstracted from my surroundings, passion, and inherent love of the Australian landscape and its birdlife. More recently my pieces reflect the transitions and changes happening to the oceans as a result of environmental change. I have always been drawn to expressing my surroundings and emotions in some way, as soon as I found metal and the ability to combine colour within it I set myself/began on a lifelong path. Sometimes I have diverted to other mediums and I spent some time mastering glass casting, which I still use for some projects. But enamelling has drawn me back every time, there is so much still to experiment within this field and I have mastered a direction that is continually changing and evolving, The technical discoveries, frustrations, and outcomes continually engage and challenge me. My initial training was in Australia, I later shifted this to Germany and England where I spent the majority of my time mastering engraving and enamelling. For the last ten years, I have been travelling to Nagoya and Osaka, Japan to attend master classes with Japanese enamelers.News!
