The German Goldsmiths’House in Hanau is currently dedicated to the treasures of traditional oriental jewellery art and its comparison to modern jewellery works by individual artists.
Nearly 300 examples – jewellery for the chest, head, arm, and finger, as well as amulets, amulet receptacles, crosses and prayer chains, belts and ornamental weapons are displayed with the thematic
focal points: Masculine Jewellery, Coins and Jewellery, The Power of the Written Word, Under the Sign of Cross, The Hand of Freedom – The Hand of Reconciliation, Feminine Jewellery in India, The Turquoise Jewellery of Central Asia, Ring Parables – Jewellery from Israel, and Zar Amulets from Egypt. Using typical techniques such as granulation, filigree, and niello as examples, the special nature of oriental goldsmith’s art is demonstrated. The attire of a married Turkoman woman of the Teke tribe and the accompanying jewellery demonstrate the prominent influence of this culture. Selected examples are used to demonstrate the prominent influence of this culture.
