Matsunaga’s combined training in textiles, metal sculpture, and jewelry is evident in her delicate hollow cushion-like vessels of enameled copper.

Jewelers'Werk Galerie is pleased to present True Colors, an exhibition of new and recent work by artist-jeweler Yumiko Matsunaga.
With the addition of a simple cord or pin, she transforms the marbled works into treasured necklaces or brooches. The title of the show, True Colors, flows from Matsunaga’s exploration of the connection between color and emotions, or the color of feelings and the inner psychology of humans. “Emotions encompass the present but are often based on the various experiences of the past. I am reminded of this by the color application of the enamel technique which is created by the superimposition of various layers… I want to create jewelry and objects that evoke memories and emotions in the viewer and the wearer through their sense of color,” Matsunaga explains.
Originally from Japan, Matsunaga is based in Halle, Germany. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Textile Arts from Meisei University in Tokyo and a Master of Arts in Metal Sculpture from the University of Art and Design in Halle, Germany, where she has also done postgraduate work in Jewelry. Matsunaga is represented exclusively in the U.S. by Jewelers’Werk Galerie.
The show opens on Saturday, October 1st with a reception to meet the artist from 1 – 4 pm and will remain on view through October 20th. This is Matsunaga’s first exhibition in the U.S.
The exhibition is open during gallery hours: Monday through Saturday 11 am – 5 pm or by appointment.
