Intro
Gradex invites leaders in the art and design industry, employers and the public to the unveiling of carefully curated works by 39 young, emerging Visual Communication Designers, Fine Artists, and Jewellery Designers.

Artist list

Corlia Baard, Milena Barkhuizen, Grace Goss, Lara Landsberg, Bongani Mashange, Naleen Venter, Katuska van Heerden
The event focuses on celebrating and supporting student’s transition into the creative industry. The event presents the public with the opportunity to purchase student work. A range of additional graduate works will be available at our pop-up store which will run concurrently with the exhibition. Notably, Jess Kapp, a graduating fine artist and winner of the 2018 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition, will exhibit her winning piece titled Mapping Time alongside the work of merit award winner Megan Serfontein. Topics ranging from exploring the social spaces of Kayamandi High School to mapping the unconscious mind exemplify the richness and diversity of young, emerging creatives’ interests.

Visual Communication Design focuses on a multi-disciplinary approach to design grounded within specific social and cultural contexts. With the aim of equipping students as change makers and innovators within their field, students are encouraged to develop a critical eye, conceptual approach and personal visual language.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts program aims to develop a critical understanding of the relationship between theory and practice through offering an integrated approach to fine art studies. Developing independent, disciplined research practices and technical and conceptual skills are among the main objectives.

Jewellery Design focuses on both the conceptual element of the design process as well as seamless technical execution. An investigative and reflective approach, critical thinking and merging theory and practice form the foundation of the program.

Gradex is a largely student driven/ organized event financed through the generosity of our sponsors (Origin Wine in Stellenbosch, Absolut Gallery, Magnifique, Tech X) and fundraising events held by final year students throughout the year.
