UCA Rochester at New Designers showcases the work by graduating students from BA(Hons) Contemporary Jewellery and BA(Hons) Silversmithing, Goldsmithing and Jewellery. Jewellery & Silversmithing at UCA has a rich and successful history of fostering contemporary graduate makers and designers. A workshop centred department we encourage practical material investigation and the acquisition of hand skills in the pursuit of original and innovative creative outcomes. We place significant emphasis on ‘thinking through making’. Iterative testing across a range of materials gives our students a foundation of informed making and technical understanding from which to build and expand independent research.
Artist list
Naia Conde Alonso, Jasmine Brown, Gareth Champion, Hetty Dolden, Alice Faux, Marissa Fernandes, Issey Hennessy, Jasper Malyon, Rachael Martin, Agatha Naigaga, Katso Otukile, Yanfeng Shi, Domenico Smith, Holly Stant, Sam Still, Emily Musgrave Wood
A historically rich subject, we encourage reflection on the traditional and historic applications of Jewellery & Silversmithing in developing, in our students, a strong sense of professional and creative positioning within the field. Reflecting upon the rich skills and history of making that the subject areas have fostered, our students are encouraged to develop and define their own creative practice from a contemporary perspective. This can be informed from a personal narrative or take a broader more commercial position.
Exploring and developing sustainable processes of designing and making are key to our teaching philosophy. Our students are encouraged to identify relevant source material and through investigative drawing, modelling and testing in the workshop, to produce highly resolved project outcomes.
Our international student body contributes to the diverse cultural tapestry within the department. The language of Jewellery & Silversmithing is international and we encourage a global outlook examining traditions of culture at home and abroad.
Supporting tutors:
Course Leader: Debra Allman
Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Jewellery: Lina Peterson
Senior lecturer in Silversmithing, Goldsmithing and Jewellery: Grant McCaig
