Intro
Up and Down is a contemporary jewellery project, comprising two exhibitions, one in Copenhagen, Denmark and one in Johannesburg, South Africa. This project brings makers from two very different cultures together, and the result is a wide and varied array of objects, all rooted in jewellery making, and with both personal and universal narratives.

Artist list

Katrine Borup, Kim Buck, Geraldine Fenn, Janne K Hansen, Helen Clara Hemsley, Eric Loubser, Liz Loubser, Thato Radebe, Mette Saabye, Carine Terreblanche, Thorkild Thørgensen, Samantha Vincent, Hongxia Wang, Gussie van der Merwe
The title Up and Down refers to both geographic aspects - the Danes live up north and the South Africans live down south, and everyday aspects - the usual ups and downs of life. The works depict cultural and geographic differences and similarities, as well as a diversity of materials and techniques. Plus the challenges, joys and milestones we all experience in our private and professional lives.

Up and Down was conceived in February 2020, and due to Corona the gestation period was unusually long – with the Danish part of the project finally opening at Goldfingers Gallery in Copenhagen in March 2022. Perhaps this project’s message is even more relevant today, where so many world events call for us to stand together and celebrate liberty, unity, creativity and diversity.

Thank you to The Danish Arts Foundation and Nationalbankens Jubilæumsfond for their kind support.

Opening: 11 August 2022, 6.00 – 8.30 pm

Gallery hours: Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, Saturdays by appointment.
