Bio
Kim Buck is not only a goldsmith but a maker illustrating and rewriting the perceptions of what defines jewelry, while at the same time dismantling its boundaries. Having owned his studio and gallery in the historical center of Copenhagen since 1989, Kim's experience also includes teaching as a professor at various educational institutions and participating in both solo and group exhibitions, and museum collections around the world.Statement
Though Kim's jewelry lives as a testament of technical research, it is equally relevant that the pieces are contemporary in their material, expressions, and questions raised. Kim dares to reflect the common values associated with jewelry, in efforts to rewrite and possibly rearrange. Yet, at the same time and with equal intention, creating jewelry that longs to be worn.Crossing Borders, 2016 - 2017
Pendants made from used beer cans.
The refund system, which is quite a simple system that ensures that materials are recycled, breaks down when you cross borders in Europe. The good intention does not survive a border crossing. I use beer cans as a symbol of all the other good intentions, that in recent years, crashes when you cross the borders in Europe.
Every pendant is made with the material from one beer can. They are made with "potato casting" a form of lost wax casting where you use the steam pressure from the most of the surface of a halved potato to force the molten aluminium into the mold. This is necessary because of the high surface tension of molten aluminium. The cooling time is controlled so that the metal forms visible crystals on the surface when cooling down. The only post-processing is that I cut off the sprue and put my name stamp in.
