Up and Down is a contemporary jewellery project, comprising two exhibitions, one in Copenhagen, Denmark and one in Johannesburg, South Africa. This project brings makers from two very different cultures together, and the result is a wide and varied array of objects, with both personal and universal narratives.
Artist list
Katrine Borup, Kim Buck, Geraldine Fenn, Janne K Hansen, Helen Clara Hemsley, Eric Loubser, Liz Loubser, Thato Radebe, Mette Saabye, Carine Terreblanche, Thorkild Thørgensen, Samantha Vincent, Hongxia Wang, Gussie van der Merwe
The title Up and Down refers to both geographic aspects - the Danes live up north and the South Africans live down south, and everyday aspects - the usual ups and downs of life. The works depict cultural and geographic differences and similarities, as well as a diversity of materials and techniques. Plus the challenges, joys and milestones we all experience in our private and professional lives.
Up and Down was conceived in February 2020 so the gestation period has been unusually long. I believe that the concept and message of this project is even more relevant now, because of the years of Corona that have affected us all, not to mention the current situation in Ukraine, which gives many of us an even greater desire to unite across the vast kilometres and celebrate unity, creativity and diversity.
The South African part of the project will be held at Tinsel Gallery, Johannesburg: 11 August to 1 September 2022.
Thank you to The Danish Arts Foundation and Nationalbankens Jubilæumsfond for their kind support.
Opening:
17 March 2022, 16 - 19.
Opening Hours:
Tuesday to Friday 11.30 - 17.30; Saturday 11.30 - 15.00; Sunday and Monday closed.
