By choosing jewellery as his medium Frédéric Braham plays along with the game of manipulating one’s identity.
Artist list
Frédéric Braham
Frédéric Braham makes beautiful, wearable jewellery with great skill and a goldsmith’s attention to detail. But this French artist is not only concerned wih adornment and perfectionism: in his work he tends to put the beauty- and cosmetics industry under the microscope. An almost obvious choice for somebody coming from the country where the concern for the selfimage has been brought to the highest perfection.
By choosing jewellery as his medium Frédéric Braham plays along with the game of manipulating one’s identity. However his jewels will be interfering with the mask of the eventual wearer. Flasks, mirrors and pills are incorporated in his necklaces and brooches; eye-make-up is set in precious metals like gemstones. The persuasive marketing strategies which won the consumer over, are blatently on display. Braham likes to create confusion and time for thought, but he also ventures into more unpleasant territory like the matter-of-course way the body has become subject to fictitious beauty standards.
With the message his means of expression may also vary: the exhibition presents not only jewellery but also objects and installations. A paper bag from Chanel or Nina Ricci may be practical, but it can also be turned into a statussymbol. The artist made a meticulous bronze replica as a monument to potential victims.
