. With this project, I endeavoured to bring the positives to light. Despite the countless struggles of the world, a little kindness and compassion can indeed go a long way. If history has taught us anything, it is that nothing can ever be solved through continuously perpetuating negativity, hatred and fighting. .

. My grandfather kept a tiny St.Barbara icon in the pocket of his jacket while fighting in the Northern Epirus front during the Italian offensive against Greece in WW II (1940-41). St.Barbara might have reminded him of my grandmother who raised her glass at the family banquets to wish him well and was serving at Red Cross back home. The icon condensed memories, wishes and faith and gave him the strength to carry on..

. The global hunger for energy and raw materials makes war an obligatory means to fulfill the promise of unlimited prosperity and to keep up the circuit of production and consumption.
. The plastic toy guns I use in the jewellery series I created for the exhibition Polemos refer both to the raw material which is the fundament of our synthetic age, and the political power system necessary to secure its exploitation..

. How was it? I'm often asked. We were equals in a prison, in misery. It was humiliating and absurd. After these 30 years since the Communism fell, my jewellery collection tells the story of the daily life, the daily queues, of the people living in their small and cold, concrete apartments and thinking all the time of how to get some food, hot water, toilet paper, gas, books, light, films, music, coffee, ...soap....

. For the Polemos exhibition I have created a shoulder and a neck piece, and a cuirass in the form of a pregnant belly with the remains of bulging tattoos. This is a surreal twist because I created "armory", using modern technics with tattoos that should remind about battle scars and ornaments of original medieval armory..

Or, as Albert Einstein put it, a liberation from a kind of optical illusion of consciousness, in which a human experiences himself as separate from himself, from his thoughts and feelings and ultimately as separate from everyone else..

Statement: An unpunished crime against humanity
"On June 10, 1944, for over two hours, Waffen-SS troops of the 2nd company, I/7 battalion, 4th SS Polizei Panzergrenadier Division (...) went door to door and massacred Greek civilians as part of "savage reprisals" for a partisan attack upon the unit's convoy. "(Source: Wikipedia)
The grandfather and other relatives of Leonidas Panourgias were murdered in Distomo. Panourgias engraved "St.George - Distomo" to commemorate one of the most atrocious and unrepentant crimes against humanity Germany committed during WWII - a crime that still remains unpunished.

Πόλεμος πάντων μὲν πατήρ ἐστι, πάντων δὲ βασιλεύς.

When we decided "war" would be the theme of our 6th Schmuck 2020/ Munich Jewellery Week group show, we were aware that chances of a major armed conflict this year were high. It did not cross our mind though that thousands of innocent people would perish in the corona virus hecatomb nor that world leaders would call its impact on public health, economy and society "an invisible war".

The life-threatening pandemic forced us to postpone our show WAR_ΠΟΛΕΜΟΣ originally scheduled for 11-14 March 2020 to a later date this year. Its impact on social contact will last longer than the corona virus itself, we believe. We decided to experiment with new concepts of communicating and presenting jewellery. Following Klimt02's great initiative for an online Schmuck 2020 presentation, we decided to combat social distancing by inviting readers to enter our cosmos of thoughts and emotions: the narratives behind the jewellery.

Jewellery is the most emotional art medium. Jewellery gifts invested with love set the milestones of personal history; jewellery heirlooms spread family traditions and legends over generations and bridge past, present and future. Comics are considered to be a "film made of paper". Before shooting a film, directors draw the scenes of their movie, the dialogues, the cuts and the camera positions just like a comic book on paper!

The comics WAR participants have drawn during their home isolation add insight to their jewellery and are a trailer of their reflections.

A long time ago, Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus stated: "War is the father of all and king of all; and some he shows as gods, others as men, some he makes slaves, others free." Our comics presentation project abolished the boundaries of art genres, gave wings to our phantasy and liberated us from fear of inaction.
