Intro
On its 10th edition JOYA has invited 4 lecturers who develop their career on the international stage: Misui Barcelona, Rachel Church, Isobel Dennis and Ana Campos.

Summary:

Wednesday October 3rd - 10:00 to 11:00 h. at Disseny HUB Barcelona. Sala C
MISUI Barcelona

Barcelona-born brand MISUI is a curator of jewellers. Starting out with a specific commission, the chosen designers are free to imagine and create with all the materials and tools at their disposal, so their ideas take shape while showing the very highest standards of quality. At MISUI, the artist is integrated into the logic of the company, with specific needs related to both different markets and serial production. The jewellery designer enters into the the decision-making and and experimentation process together with the artistic direction and the production team involved in the process. The talk will focus on the points of tension and learning between the artist's universe and that of the company.

The Victoria and Albert Museum: 170 years of collecting jewellery
When the collector Edmund Waterton presented his collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1862, it was reviewed in the London Society thus: "For years past this gentleman has been collecting rings, not for their beauty or costliness, but for their illustrative character. He has here between five and six hundred. It is a speciality worth looking closely at for a few minutes."
The South Kensington Museum (later renamed V&A), from its earliest days, decided to collect jewellery, not for its costliness, but as an interesting and valid part of the decorative arts. The collection now includes over 5000 pieces of jewellery in the Western tradition, from a small group of archaeological and classical jewels to contemporary objects made in recent years. The collection aims to reflect the main types of jewellery and developments in style and incorporate the works of artist and studio jewellers along with major jewellery houses. In this talk, I will look at how the collection has developed, examine the case of particular collectors and donors, how the collection has been shaped through historical forces and discuss the way in which the museum currently approaches collecting jewellery. I will also look at the William and Judith Bollinger Jewellery Gallery, which is one of the most spectacular jewellery displays in the world.

Isobel Dennis
, United Kingdom.
Collect Fair Director

Isobel Dennis was appointed to this newly created position in order to bring leadership and steer the creative vision and commercial success of Collect: The International Art Fair for Modern Craft and Design.
With over 20 years' experience in the private sector organising consumer exhibitions, Isobel brings a level of commercial knowledge and expertise to Collect. One of the Directors at Upper Street Events for 14 years, her role involved overseeing a group of exhibitions and in particular the graduate event New Designers. More recently, she held the position of Director of Audience at the Design Museum where she developed a new commercial approach to its marketing, communications and exhibitions programming.
Isobel has an understanding of how the collaboration between the disciplines of craft, art and design is now producing surprising and remarkable outcomes. Collect will continue to embrace this blend, supporting the galleries representing multidisciplinary artists who continue to produce new and stunning work. This growing recognition of how craft is the foundation for providing the skill and intellectual rigour behind new and contemporary pieces is one to be celebrated and shared.

RAMóN PUIG: THE JOURNEY
Ramón Puig Cuyàs always describes his creative process as if it were a journey of discovery. This means that he goes on a reflexive journey in which past and present are in dialogue, configuring motivations and symbolic reconfigurations of Mediterranean culture. His jewellery inhabits a mestizo space in terms of process. That is, it is art, just as it is craft. This assertion suggests that his work is a category of art that exists in the tension between the two systems. Exploring both art and craftsmanship, Ramón resorts to challenges in both directions. These challenges are a means of playing without any interest other than play itself. They signify creativity, as well as thoughtful and sensitive actions
