Slowness and Patience. A lecture by Noel Guyomarc’h

From this reflection emerged a broader theme, one that extends far beyond enamel and its whims: that of slowness in creation. A slowness that can be technical—inherent in the gesture, the material, the process—but which is often also conceptual. Before touching the material, there is that silent time when an idea seeks its form, when the project exists only as a vague intuition.

In a world dominated by speed, mass production, and immediacy, taking one’s time in the creative process seems almost… subversive, outdated. Learning to embrace this invisible time without the feeling of losing it.

Winner of the 2023 Charles-Biddle Award, recognising his contribution to Quebec’s cultural and artistic development, Noel Guyomarc’h, originally from Brittany, moved to Montreal in 1988. He opened his gallery in 1996. As a curator, promoter, and advisor, he has organised over 190 solo and group exhibitions in Canada and abroad. His work has been the subject of numerous articles. Regularly invited to serve on juries and as a speaker, he also acts as an evaluator for several national and international institutions. Chairman of the Board of Directors of the École de joaillerie de Montréal from 2004 to 2011, he has successfully led creative workshops since 2010. Since 2024, he has served on the Board of Directors of Art Jewelry Forum, an American organisation dedicated to contemporary jewellery.
