Open Call for the BKV Prize 2022 for Young Applied Arts

BKV Prize is a platform for young artists from all over the world. It's a perfect start for a successful career in your field: The winners of the BKV-Prize for Young Applied Arts are not only granted the respect and attention of the world of applied arts but are also rewarded with a financial prize. Apply by 26th July 2021 and take part in the competition to win this great prize awarded by the Bavarian Crafts Council (Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein, BKV).
The competition was started back in 2006 by the Bavarian Crafts Council with the aim to support the careers of young artists, and since then the prize has been awarded every year.
Craftspeople from all over the world who have finished their training but haven't yet completed their 35th year of age (deadline 1st January 2022), are invited to take part in the competition. All areas of the applied arts are welcome. All entries will be appraised by a yearly changing jury of professionals who will evaluate skilled craftsmanship as well as artistic creativity and originality.

The works of this year's winners and finalists are exhibited at the Bavarian Crafts Council in Munich from 23rd  April to 15th May, where they can be admired and purchased.
The winners and their pieces will be presented and honoured at the Internationale Handwerksmesse IHM in Munich, Sonderschau “Handwerk & Design”. The event is planned for next year from 9th to 13th March 2022 (Covid-dependant).
Young artists who enter their application by 26th July 2021 will have the chance to benefit from an extensive promotion package including the prize money of 3000 Euros for 1st prize, 2000 Euros for 2nd  prize and 1000 Euros for 3rd prize. In addition, the winners will be honoured with a complementary three year free of charge membership in the Bavarian Crafts Council. The winning pieces, as well as the works of some specially chosen finalists, will be shown during the Internationale Handwerksmesse, and the following exhibition in the gallery rooms of the  Bavarian Crafts Council (BKV) in Munich.

Exhibition of works of winners and finalists: 9 - 13 March 2022, Internationale Handwerksmesse IHM, Sonderschau “Handwerk & Design”, Munich, and 8 April to 7 May 2022, Bavarian Crafts Council (Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein, BKV), Pacellistr. 6-8, Munich.

Conditions of participation
  • Artisans who have not yet reached 35 years of age by the cut-off date (January 1, 2022).
  • Entrants must have completed their training and be professionally engaged in fine craftsmanship.
  • The entry must consist of 3 (maximum 5) pieces of work. These must not be older than 2 years as of the cut-off date (January 1, 2022) and must not have been awarded a prize or exhibited in any other competition.
  • The required documentation must be submitted to the Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein in Munich no later than July 26, 2021.
  • Delivery and return transport are undertaken at the expense and risk of the entrant.

Competition procedure
  • Stage 1: Photo jury. The jury selects works to be presented to the object jury based on the images submitted. The deadline for entry is July 24, 2020. Artisans whose works are selected by the jury in the first stage will be notified in writing and asked to send in the works.
  • Stage 2: Object jury Entrants will be notified of the jury decision in writing.
  • Stage 3: Award ceremony The award ceremony will take place on March 12, 2022 at the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich.

Required documentation
Required documentation must be submitted via post by July 26, 2021 to the Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein in Munich and should be addressed as follows: “BKV-Prize 2022”, Pacellistraße 6-8, 80333 München/Munich, Germany. Submitted material cannot be returned.

  • Biographical details
Text files should be submitted on CD-ROM (do not use stickers or labels); all texts must be submitted as PDF files. Biographical details should include the following: date and place of birth, training and qualifications, professional career, individual and group exhibitions, publications, and awards.
  • Images of the competition entries (3 max. 5 different works).
Image data should be submitted on CD-ROM; all images must be submitted as JPG files. Images must measure at least 10 x 15 cm with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. The filenames of each image must contain the entrant’s name, title of work, and sequence number. Please enclose DIN A4 color prints of each image.
  • Image descriptions of competition entries
Text files should be submitted on CD-ROM; all texts must be submitted as PDF files. The image descriptions should be comprised of two documents: the application document, containing the entrant’s name, detailed address, phone number and date of birth, and the description document on a neutral sheet of paper, containing the title of each work with the date of creation, material, technique, size, and name of photographer.
