Open Call. San W Gallery Studio Artist Residency Program

San W provides each AIR a studio space, which will allow the artists to develop their existing bodies of work and also explore new processes. At the end of their tenure AIR have the opportunity to exhibit their work in our gallery.
SAN W AIR Program: Located in Pudong, Shanghai, San W is a multi-functional gallery/studio dedicated to contemporary craft and design within the sectors of Jewellery/metal, ceramics & glass.
This highly competitive program encourages a diverse group of artists to work in a collaborative, community based Jewellery & Metal Studio. 2-4 residencies occur at San W each year.
The resident/s will spend some of their time teaching classes to our diverse student/community and/or have the opportunity to refine/develop their skills in workshops/classes conducted by other Visiting/Resident Artists as well as our Studio Director, Kenny Son.

1 Month or 3 Months

Please contact at least 4 months advance before the time you would like to start residency. So that we can have enough time to prepare VISA and Accommodation.

Two Categories of residency are available:
The Professional Residency is aimed at high profile applicants, giving them the opportunity to develop new or existing work. Each applicant is expected to have considerable experience as a maker to be considered for this program.
Residents in this category are required to:
Self-directed Residency
The Self-directed Residency is aimed at experienced makers/artists with capabilities to develop work within their discipline safely and independently to be considered for this program.

Workshop Specifics/Facilities
Jewellery & Metal Studio:
1 enamelling kiln, 3 rolling mills, hydraulic press, 2 polishing/buffing machines, belt sender, mini lathe, manual shear, doming blocks & punches, forming hammers, anvil, 4 orca torches, 16 flexi-shafts, 4 x single jewellers benches, 3 x quad-jewellers benches, bench drill press, 2 grinders, enamel material, wire drawing mill, mini drill press, ring stretcher, magnetic tumbler, melting furnace, disc punch, extensive range of hand tools.
Ceramics Studio:
A separated Working Studio in the hub of the Ceramics culture of China, Jindezhen. Accessibility and availability to utilise and work with the Jindezhen based (university/artists) ceramics workshops.
Glass:
500x500x700 Electric Furnace, Flame working equipment & tools.

- Provide their own materials
- Be a resident at San W for 1 or 3 months
- Required to work a minimum of 20 hours/week in studio producing work
- Conduct 2 classes/workshops
- Develop and make work for San W Online Shop &/or Gallery (exhibition)
- Full Return Flight tickets (If not a local resident)
- Studio Space in the relevant studio, including equipment and tools appropriate to that studio
- Accommodation provided, to be allocated one room and may share the kitchen, bathroom & living space with another resident
- Promotional assistance and opportunity for retail exposure at San W.
- Opportunity to teach additional classes/workshops to generate income
Self-directed Residency
The Self-directed Residency is aimed at experienced makers/artists with capabilities to develop work within their discipline safely and independently to be considered for this program.
Residents in this category are required to:
- Provide their own accommodation
- Provide their own travel costs/arrangements
- Provide their own materials
- Be a resident at San W for 1 or 3 months
- Required to work a minimum of 20 hours/week in studio producing work
- Develop and make work for San W Online Shop &/or Gallery (exhibition)
Residency Includes:
- Studio Space in the relevant studio, including equipment and tools appropriate to that studio
- Promotional assistance and opportunity for retail exposure at San W.
- Opportunity to teach additional classes/workshops to generate income
