Intro
Algures Escola de Joalheria Contemporánea organises an experience to discover the fascinating handicraft culture of Cariri, in the heart of Brazil.
In the heart of the Brazilian Sertão we find Cariri. More precisely, in the southern portion of Ceará, embedded in a biome that only exists in Brazil: the Caatinga. Cariri is a kaleidoscope resulting from the meeting of religious and cultural traditions of populations from other areas with the local people. Over time the blending of various traditions generated a very particular culture produced from the coming together of indigenous, European and African customs. The region concentrates countless artists, writers, musicians, artisans, dreamers... which makes it into one of the most original cultural manifestations in the country, representing the living memory of Brazil's tangible and intangible heritage.

Before entering Juazeiro do Norte, a religious and jewellery center, we immersive in Nova Olinda and its neighbouring Santana do Cariri, Potengi and Assaré. With attentive ears we will listen to the stories of dream hunters; the birds of the Caatinga; and the strikes of the iron forge that, early in the morning, wake the city as tools are produced. With eyes wide open we will visit the masters of leather, lace, hammocks. We will travel to the remote time of the pterosaurs and, body and soul, will join men, women and children who have much to teach and foster this prose, this reisado, this cordel! We intend to experience a little of this Brazil and discover how we can talk about it through investigative and sensitive work. The objective of this immersion is to produce - through jewellery and from the culture of cordel - an object of speech that will be brought to our body as an expression of that journey.

*Cordel is a popular literary genre often written in rhyme, resulting from oral accounts of folk tales, poems and songs, printed in booklets or pamphlets. Cordel became popular in Brazil in the North and Northeast regions and is now widespread throughout the national territory.
