Intro
Portugal has a very rich and antique tradition in filigree. While this technique is nowhere near exclusive to our culture, there are a few technical and style characteristics that make it easily recognisable and unique. Those same characteristics make it an excellent starting point to start developing your own personal style.
In this workshop, I will teach the participants the beauty and technique of traditional Portuguese filigree until they are familiar and autonomous with it. Then those who wish can move on to a more contemporary approach, as soon as they feel confident to do so.

In the first two to three days, we will be making a traditional pendant or pair of earrings. There will be a few options for students to explore the different techniques to fill the structure, embellishments and structure making. There will be a choice between two or three structures, but not much freedom in the way to fill them with filigree, as there are things I need to teach that need to be done in a certain kind of way. The first exercise is mandatory.

The last two days will progress in whatever way the student feels best: either practice on different pre-determined projects or try to develop something he or she has in mind.

Requirements: The student must have patience and dexterity for extremely detailed work with fine wires. Everything is very small, so it’s also mandatory that the student can see perfectly at very short distances. It’s not necessary to have experience in jewelry, although if you don’t, you may need to think about it.

Dates: 19 to 23rd of August, 9:30 to 17:30 (one hour for lunch)
Price: 450 € (course). There will be no refunds on the teaching value, though. I may, however, get you something else to do it you want to in the workshop. You may want to purchase additional wires to practice when you get home
Included: Value of 120 € of material and tools to make a few projects (in principle there should still be enough to practice at home). In case the student decides not to continue with the technique, there is the possibility to exchange the unused silver for its equivalent in fine silver and the tools for 20 g of fine silver as well.
Not included: Additional filigree wire or solder.
Duration: The course is a total of 30 hours.
Minimum number of students: 4
Maximum number of students: 8
Language: The course will be taught in English or Portuguese.

You do not need to bring any tools, but if you particularly like something you normally use, feel free to bring it with you.

If these dates are not convenient, send me an e-mail so we can book another edition.
