Intro
New Klimt02 member Nora Sarlak shares her vision of contemporary jewellery, captivated by its potential as a medium for personal and cultural narrative, allowing her to weave stories not just with words.
Tell us about your background. What were your first influences to be creative and become an artist and what has drawn you to contemporary jewellery?
My artistic journey began in the heart of Persia, where the rich tapestry of culture and tradition first sparked my creative spirit. The intricate beauty of Persian art and architecture, combined with the vivid storytelling of my heritage, nurtured my early inclination towards artistic expression. It was this foundation that drew me towards contemporary jewelry, captivated by its potential as a medium for personal and cultural narrative, allowing me to weave stories not just with words, but with metals and gems.

How important is networking for you in your professional practice, and what are your preferred tools for this?
Networking is vital in my professional practice. It's a dynamic conduit that connects me to the global art community, offering opportunities for collaboration, inspiration, and growth. I rely on both traditional and digital platforms for networking. Social media, particularly Instagram, is instrumental for its visual focus, allowing me to showcase my work and connect with other artists and enthusiasts. Art exhibitions and symposiums also play a crucial role, offering a tangible space for exchange and connection.

What are your general thoughts on the contemporary jewellery world (education, market, development...)? Where do you see chances, and where are dead ends?
The contemporary jewelry world is a fascinating amalgamation of tradition and innovation. Education in this field has become more accessible, yet challenges remain in balancing technical skill with creative freedom. The market is evolving, increasingly recognizing jewelry as an art form, yet there's a need for greater appreciation of the artistic value over mere ornamentation. The development of sustainable practices in jewelry making is promising, but there's still a journey ahead to fully embrace eco-conscious methods.

Thinking about your career, what role do technology and the digital play in your artistic development & communication?
Technology and digital platforms have been transformative in my career. They serve not only as tools for creation but also as channels for communication and expression. Digital media has enabled me to reach a wider audience, share my creative process, and engage with a global community. Technology in jewelry design, like 3D printing, has opened new avenues for experimentation, allowing me to explore forms and structures that were previously unattainable.

How has your work changed over the past few years and what are you excited about these days?
Over the years, my work has evolved from purely aesthetic creations to deeply introspective pieces that reflect my personal and philosophical inquiries. I'm currently excited about integrating more sustainable materials and practices into my work, exploring how jewelry can not only adorn but also convey a message about our relationship with nature and each other. The fusion of traditional techniques with contemporary themes continues to inspire me, as I seek to create pieces that are not just visually striking but also emotionally resonant.
