Bio

Born and raised in York, UK, he developed an early fascination with materials through the city’s rich history and ancient limestone walls. He studied Metalwork and Jewellery at Sheffield Hallam University and now works as a self-employed artist-jeweller. His work is sold through selected galleries and shows across the UK, and he is based at Exchange Place Studios in Sheffield.

Statement

Chris Boland's fascination with the inherent structure of inorganic elements serves as the guiding force behind his jewellery. Through the integration of robust and distinctive shapes, he seeks to accentuate the singular characteristics present in gemstones and their inclusions. Drawing inspiration from the surface treatments of architectural metalwork and sculpture, Chris is captivated by the beauty found in the marks and traces left during the construction process.

For him, the essence of authorship is deeply embedded in the meticulous crafting of each object. Working directly with metal allows him to explore its physical properties authentically. What he presents is not a mere reproduction of works in wax or additive manufacture; instead, it is a visceral response of tools interacting with metal, employing traditional manufacturing techniques such as score-folding, soldering, filing, and hand-finishing.

From its conceptualization, Chris' jewellery embodies minimalism and fundamental design. However, throughout the construction journey, complexity naturally emerges through serendipitous mark-making and real-time responses to the evolving form. Deliberately designed, the stone is presented to the viewer in a visually pleasing and unconventional manner.

Central to Chris' artistic narrative is the significance of the gemstone's story. Therefore, all the stones used in his creations are natural and minimally treated. He firmly believes in conveying the unique narrative of each stone through distinctive metal designs, ensuring that the essence of the gemstone remains integral to the overall storytelling in his work.
