Bio

Leslye Qin Zhang wishes her work presenting her personality could always hold the glamor and keep alive even when she immerses herself in the crowd. Based in Shanghai, China. She learned professional knowledge and skills of contemporary jewellery design in the metal craft studio at Shanghai University Academy of Fine Arts in 2018. And in the year 2021, she received her degree in MA Design (Jewellery and Metalwork) from Sheffield Hallam University, UK. 

Statement

Due to her background in biology, Leslye Qin ZHANG has a particular interest in highlighting often-overlooked marine organisms. Her work employs the visual language of jewellery to underscore the threats posed to these underwater creatures by human activities.

ZHANG selects metal wire crochet as her medium, which evokes an underwater world characterized by organic forms, vibrant colors, soft textures, and transparency. This technique allows for deep reflection on the challenges it presents. Each step in the process is irreversible, yet every stage offers innovative possibilities. The design revolves around creating new connection methods, structural shapes, and a fluid, visually expressive language.

Living organisms are inherently irregular; they do not conform to rigid rules. Each piece I create is akin to nurturing a unique life form, embodying my creative philosophy. In this context, imperfection is beauty, a testament to the natural world.
