Xiaohui Yang is a Chinese artist working in jewellery and ceramics. A lecturer in the Jewellery Department at Shandong University of Art and Design, Yang obtained a Master of Arts with Honours degree from the Queensland College of Art (QCA), Griffith University in 2008 and has been a visiting scholar at QCA, since 2015. At present, she is studying a Doctoral of Visual Art in Australia. Rather than making traditional jewellery Yang prefers to create objects that promote dynamic responses from the viewer or potential “wearer”. By drawing on the connection between objects and wearers, she attempts to create visible, touchable, measurable and expressible circumstances of sensory experience to prove that the body and object interact and mutually shape, in a two-way record.
Statement
Jewellery and Body SpaceThe jewellery objects attached to our skin, not only decorate the body but also affect the wearer’s body space, physical behaviour, physical attitude and body culture. My research focuses on analysing the relationship between jewellery and body space. By making jewellery with different materials and intended for different forms of wearing, I aim to detect and interrupt the personal and interpersonal spatiality around bodies in ways that explore and moderate physical and cultural body perceptions.
