Intro
Xiaohui Yang is a Chinese artist working in jewellery and ceramics. A lecturer in the Jewellery Department at Shandong University of Art and Design, Yang obtained a Master of Arts with Honours degree from the Queensland College of Art (QCA), Griffith University in 2008 and has been a visiting scholar at QCA, since 2015. At present, she is studying a Doctoral of Visual Art in Australia. Rather than making traditional jewellery Yang prefers to create objects that promote dynamic responses from the viewer or potential “wearer”. By drawing on the connection between objects and wearers, she attempts to create visible, touchable, measurable and expressible circumstances of sensory experience to prove that the body and object interact and mutually shape, in a two-way record.

Statement

My practice involves creating hand-produced objects which invite the audience to reconsider their own bodies and perceptions. I also seek to create objects which act as an imaginative catalyst and encourage multiple forms of engagement or interaction. I aim to create objects that deliberately fall between the defining borders of jewellery and sculpture; jewellery and installation art. The objects at first read like practical items (a necklace, a ring) but later refuse any final function. After handling the objects, the viewer may realize the item doesn’t properly fit the body, reliably balance on the table or function in the way its form implies. My research attempts to explore the possibility of making playful, decorative and beautiful objects that also offer frustrating yet insightful experiences that inform cross-cultural understanding.
