The new publication Color in Knitting introduces the nigh on endless possibilities of multicoloured knitwear and is at the same time a practical handbook for designers wish- ing to expand or deepen their design practice. It focuses closely on colour in flatbed technology, thus optimizing access to the subject by consciously omitting other colour-related finishes such as dyeing, printing, or embroidery.

The introductory “Color Journey” presents the fascinating variety of industrially produced knitting patterns using ex- examples from the extensive archives of the long-standing STOLL company, today part of the KARL MAYER GROUP. The selected patterns from past decades illustrate particularly clearly the various methods used in polychromic knitting and the resulting colour effects. Alongside the patterns are keywords that refer to the technical chapters in part two. In addition, each pattern is provided with a code number, which can be found online in Stoll’s so-called Patternshop, enabling further research via their website.

Part two of the book provides insights into the specific techniques used to create the patterns shown. Technical drawings showing stitch notations make it possible to trace the construction of the knitted pieces. The aim is to establish a foundation for individual research of the structures and techniques in order to achieve one’s own goals in combining colours.
The matrix at the end of the book summarizes all examples and links the featured patterns to their correspond- ing technical chapters. A concluding glossary provides information on the meanings of the specialist terminology used.

A book that is both beautiful and practical. Featuring many large-format illustrations of coloured knitwear and details as well as thoroughly researched information, diagrams, and references, it will inspire not only designers but also all those interested in the potential of multicolour knitting with flatbed technology.
