Intro
As one of the great proponents of the modern American Studio Crafts movement, William Underhill (1933–2022) combined techniques from ceramics and metallurgy to create impressive metal sculptures with a unique formal idiom. The work of this renowned sculptor is now being published for the first time in a comprehensive monograph.

William Underhill attended the California College of Arts& Crafts and went on to study at the University of California, Berkeley, first architecture with Charles Eames and Buckminster Fuller, and later art with Peter Voulkos and Richard O’Hanlon. In 1961 he started out casting bronze sculptures by means of the lost-wax process, with wax-coated clay molds or vessels serving as the basis for these. In 1969 he was offered a position at Alfred University, where he taught sculpture until 1997 and established a bronze-casting foundry.

With this accompanying publication, Underhill’s distinguished treasure trove of unique sculptures is now being made available to a wider public for the very first time. A perfectly formed book.
