Intro
The Spring Show features the best work for the entire University, and under normal circumstances, the MA and MFA graduates would have a separate space at the OS venue to have their individual shows. Each Graduate student has a section to display their thesis work. This Covid year it was all digital, and inclusive.

Artist list

Trevor Anderson, Mehrdad Bagherpourhamedani, Ying Lin, Sandy Ong, Wanni Xiang, Yanjun Yu, Zhongfang Zhang
Trevor Anderson. Sculpture: Remember Not to Forget, 2020. Hand-forged, pattern-welded steel.. 8.9 x 1.3 x 1.3 cm. Statement: My show was comprised of a series of wearable and sculptural pieces constructed from hand-forged, pattern-welded “Damascus” steel, and woven Kevlar knit-wear. I employ materials that are encoded with a sense of conflict and trauma, while subverting the domesticity of knitted or crocheted objects. My worn pieces emphasize the notion of “the other,” in the context of contemporary masculinity.. Trevor Anderson

Mehrdad Bagherpourhamedani. Ring: Autumn, 2018. Silver, Amitis.. 1.4 x 1.4 x 2 cm. Photo by: Mehrdad Bagherpourhamedani. Statement: What I have been striving for in my artworks is an attempt to re-establish harmony between the tradition, religion and convention of where I grew up, and changing culture. Therefore, I titled my thesis project "Evolving Modernity within Tradition". The experience of emigration has taught me it is so important, as an artist, to reinterpret old tradition and convention by taking the positive aspects of them and turning them into a contemporary way of thinking and designing.. Ying Lin. Necklace: Remeber Me, Summer, 2019. Bronze, copper, crystal quartz.. From series: Fig and Fig Wasp - What Makes a Memory. Statement: I combine different materials and techniques, to create visual contrasts and metaphors within these works. For example, use rigid metal, fragile wings, and broken shapes explore contrasting ideas within a flowing, unified, and unending life. Growth, Identity,  explores the relationship between parents and children. In order to express these intense but close relationships, each ring’s function has given way to symbolic forms, and the result is both robust and delicate, playful, yet pointed.. Ying Lin

Wanni Xiang. Installation: Collection Myself, 2019. Brass, silver, egg, rubber, copper, silk stockings, paper, found objects.. 177 x 119 x 6.5 cm. Statement: The title fo my MA thesis is Collecting Myself. I consider the process of creating the works in this series as a method for self-inspection, acceptance and improvement and the process turns into an opportunity for me to hold dialogues with myself, and to vent my emotions. For Example, one of those works in this series is a paper necklace titled Choked. In this piece, I asked strangers to write words that describe themselves onto the necklace. I wrote down ‘social anxiety’ as my own label. Through this interactive method of making this piece, I forced myself to break through my own fear and break the label. I enjoy incorporating unconventional materials and novel working practices to push the boundary of jewelry art. In this process, I constantly find new possibilities for myself as an artist, and as a person.. Wanni Xiang
