Virginia's project is an invitation to recognize and value our unique individuality in its various appearances.
Artist list
Virginia Escobar
Virginia’s project is about physical identity. She is interested in the meanings of uniqueness and individuality. Today, when cultural identity plays an important role in all its diversity, it's surprising to see how homogenized the ideal appearance is. New and accessible technologies enable us to construct our body, following social standards that establish the ideas of beauty and perfection.
The pieces presented in this exhibition are made with a self-created material developed over her investigation. To construct the pieces, she utilizes chiselling jewellery techniques combined with thread, staples, steel wire and stainless steel.
About the artist:
Born in Colombia and previously graduated as Attorney at Law with a Master in Business Administration, Virginia Escobar quit her career in 2010, and began to study jewellery in Bogota. In 2017 she enrolled in the MFA Jewellery & Body Ornament program at Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School in Florence.
Her previous work has been exhibited in her country, and she has also participated in international exhibitions as Joya Barcelona, LOOT- MAD Museum NYC,
Beijing International Jewelry Art Exhibition, Gioielli in Fermento, Parcours Bijoux -Paris and Athens Jewelry Week. Part of her new work is currently presented at Museum Arnhem in the Netherlands, where the exhibition Body Control is taking place.
