Being invited to have a solo exhibition in Gallery Hnoss was the right occasion for Birgit Laken to show her Heartwork, a project which she started up some time ago with making heart shapes at the beach. The upcoming water of the sea changed the heart sculptures in the wet sand gradually, to swallow them in the end. By photographing this process she got involved in what she called her Heartwork project. The images originated this way were the starting point for the jewellery she made over a period of time and are shown now for the first time.
The Heartwork project was an active working process with sand, water and the tide. To get reactions of strolling couples, to protect the heart sculptures against too enthusiastic dogs, to take the pictures on the right moment was an exciting experience. The ideas developed and interesting images were the result. Birgit Laken reacts on these images with jewellery objects, mainly brooches.
Through free association she realises installations of the photographs together with the jewellery, that tells different stories about love, sometimes serious sometimes playful.
