I am delighted to present and celebrate the work of this year’s graduates from BA Jewellery Design. As one of our largest cohorts ever, it is encouraging that the level of achievement is so strong and the breadth of subject so broad. Certainly the staff, and I hope the students themselves, are impressed by the ways in which ideas are sought, developed and matured, techniques mastered and opportunities grasped over the year.
Final Year Tutor Lin Cheung, along with visiting tutors Naomi Filmer, Maria Militsi, Melanie Georgacopolous, Antoine Sandoz and Martin Baker, has worked closely with the students to help them formulate and realise their collections throughout the year.
The first two years of study form a solid basis for self directed study and individual development with technical intensive workshops, study trips,
and contact with visiting staff with such a wide range of experience and expertise. Visits to Theo Fennell’s, Ted Noten’s and Shaun Leane’s studios and Gallery SO in Brick Lane have lent different views on the possibilities for life after university, as have this year’s series of lectures, which have included Dai Rees, Marc Monzó, Jasleen Kaur and Otto Künzli. This is the third year we have run the Swarovski Design Project in the final year and the work of the ten shortlisted students, using Alexander McQueen’s work as inspiration, was displayed at the V&A during May. The way all of these experiences inspire, challenge and motivate is clear and significant.
Over all three years of study, these students have had invaluable experience of connecting with external agencies – V&A, Swarovski, Cartier, Topshop, The Tin Plate Workers Alias Wire Workers of the City of London and The Worshipful Company of Leathersellers. We are very fortunate also to have partners who are supportive of the course and our students: Avakian, the Swarovski Foundation, Theo Fennell, Solange Azagury-Partridge, J&J, Boodles, Winterson and Margarita Wood.
We warmly welcome you to the 2015 degree show to see the students’ collections. The course team wish them all the very best in developing their careers across the field of jewellery.
