For the first time in this spectrum Peter Frank (*1956), Freiburg, and Saskia Detering (*1978), Hildesheim, present their works of the last 25 respectively 12 years at the silver hall of the German Goldsmiths‘ House.
Artist list
Saskia Detering, Peter Frank
The visitor meets two very distinctive positions, which alternatively increase in the synopsis.
Saskia Detering focuses on brooches, bracelets and ceramic objects, Peter Frank preferentially shows necklaces.
Based on organic and architectural motives the style of Peter Frank becomes more reduced and focused over the years. Mechanical articulations link playfully the several elements. The lock becomes integrated fluently in the circulating form. In his recent works Peter Frank picks up the idea of the classical collier of pearls by varying the form of the balls and arranging them in the allusion to a millennium-old jewellery theme. During his former creative development one encounter frequently the bill pattern, derived from the flat-pointed pliers of the goldsmith, which in turn go back to the bill used as tool of the bird.
The pictorial, aquarell-like gently surface of his mainly of silver mounted works often leave them like archeological finds of imaginary civilisations. This shows a relationship to the jewellery objects of Saskia Detering. Mysterious and full of independent existence they create confusion. A multiplicity of overlying marks, as arising during embossing, shaping, scoring, welding, forging, perforating etc. reveal that not „finds“ are concerned but „pick-up pieces“. Brooches with titles like „old basket“, „scrub“ or „plague mask“ can be named as example for the preference of Saskia Detering to give supposed ugly things a decorative shape to reinterpret it poetically. At the choice of materials aluminium plays a prominent role in jewellery because of its facileness and technical variety. Furthermore Saskia Detering shows partly large-dimensioned ceramic objects with sculptural charisma.
On the occasion of the exhibition a 24 sided catalogue of Saskia Detering is available.
