Zhang Kun’s sculptural point of departure is the rectangular prism. As a stable anchor, this clear geometric form embodies calm, stability, and clarity. The rectangular prism reflects the spatial structures created by human will—spaces that, on the one hand, isolate themselves from the outside world, and on the other, protect and preserve what lies within.

Kun Zhang
In her work, the rectangular prism offers a stage that remains neutral and steadfast toward both the exterior and the interior. In its relationship with the environment, the prism stands for rationality and logic. Here, it is both a frame and “being” itself—true, lucid, and concrete. Static and reserved. Neither asking nor giving.
Zhang Kun’s practice lies in developing forms that articulate emotional states, situations, impressions, impulses, moods, perspectives, intentions, and insights. Beginning with the solidity of the rectangular prism, she starts to explore and mould the inner space. The resulting abstract shapes form a stark contrast with the external geometry. They are characterised by softness and sensitivity, at once human and slightly ethereal. These forms carry impressions of warmth, tenderness, and freedom—an urge that invites the viewer to reach out, to feel them with their fingertips.
Quietly, Zhang Kun gropes her way forward, exploring with curiosity and patience her own inner world—or one she imagines. At this stage, the centre of gravity shifts within the form. The interior space, typically defined by a negative shape, begins to expand—slowly and steadily—pushing outward with a gentle yet brave insistence. It gradually penetrates and fractures that protective shell.
In many of Zhang Kun’s works, one can see the motif of the needle. If the negative internal shapes can be read as slow-spreading intentions, then the needle represents a spontaneous, emotional impulse. It thrusts outward—a slender yet confident force born from within. Its direction does not end at the tip; it extends infinitely.
Zhang Kun’s work is a narrative of inward growth—of the courage to relinquish control, of awareness and balance, and of the willingness to take risks.
Kun Zhang was born in Beijing, China. She went to Germany in 2010 to pursue her studies, and after graduating in 2018, settled there to continue her artistic practice.
Through her long exploration of Chinese symbols and forms, her work has gradually shed the constraints of established symbols and fixed meanings. Through a sustained inquiry into pure form, she has built an entirely new language of shapes. Her forms speak instead of personal perception and the revelation of the subconscious.
Her work is rooted in cultural experience and the sensory awareness that arises during the creative process. Each piece is a unique existence of its specific moment. The latest series seeks to explore the infinite dimensions of life, revealing layers of fear, jealousy, joy, aggression, and pain—life itself is multidimensional, far beyond any single viewpoint.
Opening:2025.11.15 (Sat) 15:00-18:00 h.
