Evert Nijland
Right from the start after his graduation in 1997, Evert Nijland’s jewellery was causing a sensation. In almost every aspect, his work deviates from the accepted traditions. For instance, he approaches a piece of jewellery like a painter his palette: he is mainly concerned about the effect of light falling on a surface. Without the slightest scruple, he bases his work on classical jewellery from the sixteenth or eighteenth century. Not servants of beauty, tempting the eye – his necklaces and brooches made from glass, cast iron, porcelain, wood and textile dictate their own aesthetic norms. His eccentric choice of materials leads to yet another striking characteristic: Nijland, rather than making the entire piece himself as is common practice, often has part of his work produced by another specialists such as glass blowers or weavers. Thus he unites within his work all the skills of the applied arts.
Lovers of jewellery swiftly recognized Nijland’s qualities; his work is passionately collected on the international scene and is to be found in an impressive number of museums, both in Europe and the USA. Galerie Rob Koudijs is honoured to be able to continue promoting the work of Evert Nijland.
