Extranalities currently consists of 9 jewellery artists from 9 different European countries. Founded by Herman Hermsen (NL) and Tim Carson (UK) in 2015, the collective has grown year by year, adding Peter Vermandere (BE), Felieke van der Leest (NO), Sofia Bjorkman (SE), Denise Reytan (DE), Sara Gackowska (PL), Christoph Zellweger (CH) and Catarina Silva (PT) to complete its current 2025 line-up.
Artist list
Sofia Björkman, Sara Gackowska, Herman Hermsen, Denise Reytan, Catarina Silva, Timothy Information Limited, Peter Vermandere, Christoph Zellweger, Felieke van der Leest
All the members have been pro-active in the field of contemporary jewellery for some time, and for some, a long long time. Most would identify as being freeish radicals and not top of the class for following rules. There is nothing they all collectively more enjoy than negotiating self-inflicted creative restrictions and formulating seemingly senseless making tasks as a way of challenging their practices. Bloody weirdos!
Instead of working in perfect isolation, they meet up together physically and digitally, regularly, to discuss boundaries that need to be challenged and territories that need to be explored. Extranalities follows an erratic and deeply anarchic path, something they embrace in every aspect of their process, including how the work meets the audience.
The First, the Worst, the Best & the Rest shows work from various previous Extranalities exhibitions. So yes, this may be seen as a retrospective, of sorts, but, not quite. Some of the works are shown because they formed part of the First Extranalities exhibition in which each artist participated. Another group of sorry looking and unloved works feature as the selection of works considered to be the artist’s Worst contribution to one of the, otherwise marvellous, Extranalities projects.
The Best, well that speaks for itself.
& the Rest has a different story to tell: Extranalities were granted access to the galalith collection of the Bengel Foundation which sparked some colourful creations.
Last, but not least, there are works included, where all of the words in the title are a perfect match, or none of them at all …you just never know … Viva Extranalities!
Opening Preview: Friday, October 31st, between 18.30 and 20.00hr hours.
Opening times: October 31st to November 15th, Tuesday to Sunday, 10.00 to 17.00hrs.
After November 15th, contact the venue directly.
