Intro
With the awarding of the Friedrich Becker Prize Düsseldorf, worth 10,000 Euro and an endowment of Hildegard Becker (1928–2018), the Association for Goldsmiths’ Art (Gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst e.V.) has been commemorating the eminent goldsmith Professor Friedrich Becker (1922–1997) since 1999. As an internationally renowned fashioner of kinetic objects and designer in the midst of Düsseldorf’s art scene, Becker became a shaping influence on jewelry design in the latter half of the 20th century.

Thus far, the award ceremony has been taking place every three years before a large audience in Düsseldorf; this year, owing to the prevailing circumstances, this event will take place from June 23 onwards with the announcement of the prizewinner. This will be made online and will be accompanied by an extensive presentation of all chosen contest participants and entered objects in the digital space on the specially created site.

151 artists from 16 countries entered jewelry and silver hollow- and flatware for the Friedrich Becker Prize 2020, and the prizewinner and 41 exhibition participants were selected by a high-calibre jury. These works demonstrate exciting design approaches; unusual materials and techniques are not uncommonly applied and their artisanal perfection carries conviction. All pieces represent the high artistic accomplishment that characterizes avant-garde jewelry today. The presentation in the digital space provides an entirely new platform for the Friedrich Becker Prize participants.

Presentation in the museum context takes place from June 23 until July 12 at the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf, and subsequently from July 17 until August 23 at the German Goldsmiths’ House in Hanau.
