Jee Hye Kwon: Un Seen
Published: 09.10.2018

Kwon works with multiple gauges of gold and silver wire in varied tones creating “see through spaces.” Kwon’s work combines the delicate skill of a master jeweler and the strong command of articulating architectural space.
"This collection highlights perspectives and angles. What you see from one direction is different than what you see from another. One line might abruptly end in positive space, while a different one continues completely. Philosophically, this collection is a deeper look at the absurdity of truth, and illustrates the reality of the multi-verse."

Jee Hye Kwon
As a Korean-born New York- based jewelry artist, I am inspired by both organic forms and architectures, especially buildings that are under construction. For me, all the details and elements that go into making a building are beautiful—including the reinforcing rod, ferroconcrete, and “skeletal” wood beams—but in the best works, spirituality is also an important component. Working with multiple gauges of gold, silver, and Shakudo wire and sheet that are the intrinsic value of metals in varied tones, I bring this mix of structure and spirituality into my own pieces, creating “see-through spaces.”
I illustrate the power of geometry and structural forces in shaping our emotional lives. The intricacy of the cellular constructions also hints at a biological nexus, thus linking the prodigious industry and design of nature.
The variation in size and shape promotes feelings of movement and organic growth.
