The defining elements was founded by the Greek philosophers (especially Empedocles in the 5th Century BC) and the traditional way to describe and analyze the world for the West.  Yet quite similar theories also existed in many other civilizations, particularly in the Asian world.

This theory is based on the assumption that all the world's materials are composed of one or more of these five elements: Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Ether.  According to the variations in quantity, the operating principles function in generative or destruction cycles.

Our exhibition project is divided over 2 years, with each element presented in turn.  After Earth, 'Water' is the next element selected for this project.  Artists were given the choice to address this topic through either the symbolism of water as an element, its materiality (the water of the sea, rivers and streams), or in the contemporary debates questioning the earth's water resources.
