LithoMania is a special exhibition of the Design Lab series of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin in cooperation with the Trier University of Applied Sciences, Department of Gemstones and Jewellery. Since 2019, the exhibition series "Design Lab" has invited selected design studios, students and activists to present current projects and to enter into a discourse with the collection of the Museum of Decorative Arts.
Museums of decorative arts do have a focus on material, as their collections have been structured and presented according to material and origin since their foundation in the 19th century, partly until today. The exhibition series Design Lab establishes a discourse space for current art and design projects with the exhibits of the Museum of Decorative Arts. Political and critical positions are explicitly invited.
The special exhibition LithoMania is dedicated to the theme of stone - a complex material full of contradictions.
Stone as a material has always triggered fascination and longings. From the sacred sculptures of our ancestors to the easily consumable mass product - the material opens up worlds of ideas and imagination with its unique properties. Its extraction destroys landscapes and is the cause of violent conflicts. On the other hand, stone trade and workmanship has brought people together from the most remote regions of the world for thousands of years and has been an occasion for exchange and innovation.
At its location in Idar-Oberstein, Trier University of Applied Sciences offers a worldwide unique programme of study in the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Gemstone and Jewellery (BFA) and the Master of Fine Arts in Gemstone and Jewellery (MFA) with a focus on gemstone processing. The degree "Fine Arts" establishes an artistic approach and philosophy in the orientation of the studies. Currently, 56 students from 24 countries are enrolled in Idar-Oberstein.
Opening Hours
Tue - Fri 10 am - 6 pm
Sat - Sun 11 am - 6 pm
