In this exhibition, the new meets the old, art meets art. New ways of making find their starting point in history. Things familiar and strange are present at the same time.
Ilmari Wall-Hakala defined as the aim of the Art Museum´s collection, "to promote knowledge and interest in Finnish and foreign art, to broaden the views of the public and to maintain the interest of the public in the culture of the art in general".  And this is what this exhibition is about.
I chose from the museum collection 10 works of art, consisting of paintings and one work of sculpture. I invited 20 jewellery artist to exhibit works, ten from Finland and ten from abroad. The group was divided into 10 pairs to react, for example, to a painting by Helene Schjerfbeck or Pekka Halonen. In the exhibition, all the new works of jewellery are on show alongside works from the collection.
Jewellery art, which is still in the margins in Finland, needs encounters of this kind with its audiences and I am very happy to note that the Orimattila Art Museum, in particular, has taken up this challenge. This is a significant act, which will promote awareness of jewellery art both in Finland and internationally. In their own countries, the artists selected for this exhibition are all leading names in their fields.
There are many kinds of jewellery art, as this exhibition clearly shows. It can be an installation, a collection of pieces, sleeves made of hammered metal or a piece to be worn that takes its starting point in the long tradition of jewellery and personal ornament. All this and much more. Skilfully made, challenging and breaking down boundaries. The presence of the body can be an illusion in a work of art, yet markedly present. It is only the perspective that is crucial.
I wish to thank the artists participating in this exhibition for their significant contribution, and thanks to the artist no longer with us whose works have been the inspiration for creating new things. Thank you Orimattila Art Museum.
