A selection of works, evoked by the dark tales and mysteries of the distant past, integrating history and imagination. In an enticing vision of a parallel fantasy world, Hanna creates mystical wearable objects. Her intricate, elaborate and extremely time-consuming technique, is in constant dialogue with the masterful craftsmanship of bygone times.
Event part of the Athens Jewelry Week 2019

Hanna Hedman
Hanna Hedman walks a fine line between imagination and reality, art and function. She describes her artistic practice as a dialogue between past, present and parallel worlds. Hedman’s art is exhibited around the globe; her intention is to provoke, as well as to provide solace and a sense of escape. Rather more like pieces of armour than accessories, Hedman’s jewellery occupies the dark space between the literal and the figurative, offering the wearer an entrance into an alternate universe. Elaborate techniques combined with intricate craftwork and countless hours of work are encapsulated in her objects, thus making them »products of time« and imbuing them with special energy and power. Hedman has completed nine years of art studies in the US, New Zealand, and Sweden.
My artistic practice is very much a permanent dialogue between the past, present and parallel worlds. I am convinced that objects have a material memory that triggers and relocate us to other realities and places. My recent interest into amulets and talismans (objects that not only become powerful for their materials but that are also endorsed with power and meaning to function as a tool for the user) has given direction for my own work. “North” is an on-going investigation into materials native to Sweden. Materials in the objects shown at the National Museum are collected from areas where traditions of animism are kept alive and this has been one significant aspect in the selection of materials. The antler, skins and linen are then transformed and given new characteristics and form. My making is contemporary, but I am very interested in using traditional techniques and handwork that encapsulate my objects and makes them products of the time.
