As she does each year, Katja Schlegel will present new works by contemporary jewellery artists during the International Schmuck 2013, Munich. This year the artist and curator Christian Hoedl chose creations by Sofia Björkman / Stockholm, Benedikt Fischer / Halle, Sophie Hanagarth / Paris and Karin Johansson / Göteborg.
High precision and seductive lightness characterize the wrought iron jewellery that Sophie Hanagarth creates like iron traps. She makes danger and pain visible in her fundamental themes, raise questions in borderline areas and enable memories to be felt.
The jewellery for the neck in Karin Johansson’s ‚ New Places Series ’ sketches two-dimensional planes. The austerity of graphic ground plan shines in pastel colors on the body and reveals new, formerly hidden dimensions.
Sofia Björkman first uses silk stocking to reduce the viewer’s perception and soon afterwards sends a cold chill under his skin. In small and large format, the themes of her sculptural bone brooches are the relationsships between the inner and the outher world.
With virtuosity and great sensitivity, Benedikt Fischer sets fragments into his Hard hats. He transforms pieces into pendants that are full of intensity and luminosity and to which he gives mysteriously evocative double names. He leaves us gazing in astonishment.
