Artist list
Okinari Kurokawa
Gallery deux poissons will present a solo exhibition of a Japanese jewelry artist, Okinari Kurokawa. Kurokawa (b. 1946) is currently based in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, which is one of the production districts for jewelry in Japan.
This exhibition titled “ring ring ring” will be a showcase of Kurokawa’s recent works focusing on rings. Kurokawa considers jewelry as sculptures for body. He searches forms from two aspects: beauty as an independent object, and how it looks when it is wore on body. His notable knowledge and skills of goldsmith make it possible to explore possibilities of jewelry beyond limitations. With a fresh interpretation of conventional methods, the artist transforms traditional goldsmith techniques into the contemporary.
In this exhibition, there will be more than 50 rings that will show a rich variety of his artistic languages. What they have in common is the textures and structures that cannot be made by a cast technique. Some of the rings have a texture like a rolled Japanese paper, washi. Some are the combinations of geometrical blocks such as cube and cone. One of the latest pieces is a series of rings that are figured as miniature architectures made of gold and silver. They are also demanding the audience to play with their imagination how to wear his rings.
